I’m a food photographer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My background is in Communication and Publishing. However, photography has been a passion of mine since 2013.
When Covid-19 happened (and thanks to the lockdown), I decided to take the plunge to kickstart my photography business in August 2020.
What’s my ideal photography style?
I work with soft, diffused natural light. I am proud of the way I’ve honed my craft. However, on days when there is a lack of natural light, I do utilise artificial lighting.
The ‘lightbulb’ moment
Although I started out capturing light and airy food images, after awhile the styling process became tedious and frustrating. It just didn’t feel right. Then I discovered dark and moody lifestyle food photography that tells a story.
I started styling and photographing in that vein, and it felt so much easier, natural and more instinctual. I also liked how the photos I was taking turned out!
My favourite images to compose and capture are … those which incorporate layers, textures, movement … and a human element such as hand shots of someone pouring, garnishing, sprinkling or simply holding the food, or photographing someone in a frame who’s about to devour a yummy piece of chicken drumstick. These add life, vitality and energy to the frame, creating a more eye-catching image. When you look at my images, I want them to evoke these three keywords: rustic, appetising, beautiful. And they always tell a story.
My favourite elements to capture are … details!
I live for close-up food photos and otherwise less noticeable details someone else may miss. For me, there’s no right or wrong to make art, there’s only being true to myself, my voice, style and creative vision.
Versatility is important to me
I currently operate out of a small home studio, but I’m also open to shooting on-location.
